Our founder, Michael Lockhart sat down with Kevin Crowley. He is an actor from Carol, The Fugitive, Backdraft and Major League. He is also an active comedian and teach who resides in Mike’s hometown of Cincinnati. Kevin and Mike talk about how the actor has improved his mental health and how he describes happiness.

Q1: Explain a personal trait or attribute of yours that you have tried to improve on in the past year

A: Hmm, I try everyday to be present for my friends, family and my students (I’m a teacher). That means responding quickly if someone reaches out and really listen to them.

Q2:Have you ever attended therapy? If so tell us about your experience

I have been in and out of therapy since I was in my mid-20’s and my parents split up. I find it very helpful, depending on the therapist, to talk to someone and get their advice. Whenever I think I need a mental health tune up, I book time with a therapist.

Q3:Imagine you have had a bad day and think about your happy place. Where are you?

Jaimaca, Negril specifically. I have been there several times and the sea and air and people and the vibe of that island makes me very happy.

Q4:What have you changed in your life in the past year that has had a positive impact?

I have embraced my new professional role as a teacher. I started this career very late in life and the first year was terrifying but now in my third year, I think it’s exactly what I should be doing and I’ve gotten a lot better.

Q5: Talk about one person in your life who brings you happiness.

I’ll go with my youngest son, Brennan. Mostly because we happen to be roommates right now, which I’m sure is not his ideal situation, but especially in the middle of the pandemic, I’m fortunate not to be alone and with someone I love. He makes me smile everyday.

Q6: What does happiness mean to you?

That’s a really hard question. I don’t know that I experience happiness as often as other people, but reading, cooking, exercise, walks, pets can bring me contentment and I’ll take that.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with the Standing up to Stigma team Kevin! Your help to our mission is much appreciated!
